LUFTHANSA 747 8 TAKING OFF AT LONDON GATWICK

On February 11, 2025, a Lufthansa 747-8 was on its way to Frankfurt. A medical emergency diverted the plane to London Gatwick. Thank you to Joe for the video and Phil for the photos. The airline was known for its high standards of service and its modern fleet of aircraft.

 It was often referred to as" The World's Friendliest Airline." Panagra merged with Braniff International Airways in 1967.

Miracle on the Hudson 2009. INCREDIBLE RECORVERY PHOTOS!

 In January 2009, the US Airways Airbus A320, famously known as "Flight 1549," successfully completed a ditch in the Hudson River after striking a flock of Canada geese after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York. The incident, which took place on January 15, became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson." 

Recovery operations for the aircraft began shortly after the successful ditching; this allowed all the passengers (155) and crew members to evacuate. The recovery effort was coordinated by a combination of organisations, including the Coast Guard, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and salvage companies.

Authorities created a safety perimeter around the crash site to ensure the security of the recovery operation. 

Divers assessed the conditions of the Airbus A320 to ensure that there were no further risks of fuel leaks or other hazards due to the aircraft's submersion in the river.

The initial phase involved floating devices and boats to stabilise the aircraft. The salvage teams then used heavy-lifting cranes and specialised equipment to lift the Airbus A320 from the Hudson. 

Due to the Airbus's size and weight, the process required detailed planning and consideration of the river’s currents.

January 17th, 2009, the salvage team successfully lifted the aircraft out of the River. The plane was transported to a pier for further investigation by the NTSB board. NTSB conducted a thorough detailed look at the aircraft to fully understand the cause of the ditching. It was very important also to gather any data for possible future safety requirements.

The detailed, coordinated recovery operation ensured the aircraft was saved for further work to obtain crucial evidence. It also underscored how swiftly emergency services responded in this critical time frame. 

The recovery of US Airways Airbus A320 Flight 1549 remains a notable example of effective crisis management and the resilience of both crew and passengers during an unprecedented event. To this day (2025), we still consider this a miracle for all those involved in the ditching and the expertise of the emergency services.

Heathrow Airport, the busiest airport in the United Kingdom, has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. It began as a grass airfield in 1929, serving as a base for Imperial Airways. During World War II, the airport was used by the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces.

After the war, Heathrow was expanded to accommodate the growing demand for international travel. In 1946, the first scheduled international flight landed at the airport. Throughout the following decades, Heathrow continued to grow, with new terminals and runways being added to meet the increasing number of passengers.
In the 1990s, Heathrow underwent a major redevelopment, with the construction of Terminal 5, the largest terminal in Europe. This expansion solidified Heathrow's position as a major international hub, connecting the UK to destinations around the world.
